Virginia
Product Summary
It has good burning and fullness ability. They are used to add color and flavor to blends. They can also be drunk alone.
Its leaves contain an average of 1.93% nicotine, 1.97% total nitrogen, and 22.09% reducing matter.
It is grown mostly in weak and medium strength, especially nitrogen poor, medium or rich in phosphorus and potash, neutral or slightly acidic, light colored, permeable, sandy-type, light textured, deep profiled, irrigable soils.
It requires moderate temperature and moderate rainfall as a climate. During the vegetation period, the average monthly temperature (4) is desired to be around 21 C°-22 C°, relative humidity to be 50-70%, and total annual rainfall to be around 1200 mm.
Seeds are sown sparsely in seedbeds (0.05 gr/m²), seedlings are planted in the field at wide intervals, Nitrogen fertilization should be done cautiously. (1.3 kg/da as pure nitrogen) Top breaking and sprout removal is applied. Irrigation is done 7-8 times. Breaking is done when the leaves turn completely yellow. The most mature 2-3 leaves are taken each time. Top breaking is done from about 100-130 cm of a well-developed tobacco plant. The number of harvestable leaves is 18-22. The average dry leaf yield per decare is 200-250 kg.
Drying is done in drying chambers where temperature and relative humidity can be controlled. This method is called FCV (Flue Cured Virginia). The temperature is gradually increased to 71-74°C. Relative humidity is reduced from 80-90% to 75% and then to 60%. Drying is completed in 6-8 days. After treshing and redrying, it is boxed and put into storage.
In Turkey, drying is currently done using the sun drying method (SCV). Drying in the open or under plastic covers is completed in 10-20 days, depending on weather conditions.
